About the Project
The Sustainable Hospitals Project focuses on pollution prevention and occupational safety and health in the healthcare industry. Traditionally, pollution prevention and occupational safety and health have been approached as separate issues. As a result a solution for one may merely shift a new problem into the other. The underlying premise of the SHP is that integrating pollution prevention with occupational safety and health results in more sound and appropriate solutions.
The Sustainable Hospitals Project (SHP) has 2 components:
1) Research to investigate the relationship between environment and occupational health and safety related to pollution prevention initiatives in hospitals. This consists of in-hospital research on the selection and successful implementation of new products and processes. By researching the workplace with healthcare practitioners, the research team considers the requirements of tasks, workplaces, workers, materials, and processes to ensure that a solution does not compromise quality or inadvertently introduce new and different shortcomings. This hands-on approach that engages the practitioners has been demonstrated as an effective strategy for resolving problems and improving practices. A practical tool being developed for this work is an integrated environmental and occupational health and safety assessment tool.
2) A clearinghouse and website that provide information about more environmentally sound, healthy and safe alternatives to conventional healthcare products, materials, and work practices.
