About the Program The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production was established in 1996 in order to promote more sustainable forms of industrial production. Over the past several years, the Center’s programs have grown to include activities related to the purchase, use, and disposal of products as well as their manufacture. This growth reflects our recognition that production and consumption are interconnected and interdependent. We understand that it is necessary to implement both production- and consumption-oriented strategies in order to decouple economic growth from environmental and social degradation. The Sustainable Production and Consumption Program works to promote sustainability in all of the life cycle phases of a product or service — including purchase, use, manufacture, and disposal. The Program seeks to: • Inform individual and corporate consumers about the environmental and social impacts of available goods and services, so that they can make informed purchasing decisions; • Influence retailers, wholesalers, and group purchasers to offer products that pose fewer risks to human health and the environment throughout their life cycle; and • Assist producers to redesign goods and services to improve their environmental and social impacts. The Program assists businesses, organizations, governments, and communities in two main ways. First, it provides technical expertise and comprehensive training on production- and consumption-related topics. Second, the Program brings stakeholders together and helps them collaborate more effectively to promote sustainable production and consumption.
